Sometimes He Calms The Storm, Other Times He calms His Child

What feels like 10 years ago now, but was really probably only one year, I wrote the words to Scott Krippayne’s song, Sometimes He Calms the Storm on this very blog about my feelings about moving overseas to an unknown land and an unknown people. Tonight at our Family Worship time, Eric preached on more of Isaiah (Chapters 44-45), and at the end, we sang together the worship song. I’ll put the words at the end of the post. Many people don’t like the idea that God is a sovereign God, all-knowing, all-present, but especially, all-purposing, meaning that He purposes, plans, and sets into motion ALL things. It is interesting, though, in Isaiah 45, verses 5,6 and 7 where God so clearly speaks:
I am the Lord and there is no other; besides Me there is no God. I will gird you, though you have not known Me; that men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun that there is no one besides Me. I am the Lord and there is no other. The One forming light and creating darkness, causing well-being and creating calamity. I am the Lord who does all these.
So, at the end of two weeks of measles, and what felt to me, uselessness, reading tonight, and hearing preaching that so clearly teaches that God is God and I am to welcome what He gives me for my growth, for my blessing, and for those around me as well is a hard truth. And to question Him, the Creator of All, brings Woe! I don’t know about you, but I sure don’t want God’s Woe on me.
vs. 9 of Chapter 45 says Woe to the one who quarrels with his Maker-an earthenware vessel among the vessels of earth. Will the clay say to the potter, “What are you doing”, or the thing you are making, say “He has no hands?” Woe to him who says to a father, “what are you begetting?”, or to a woman, “to what are you giving birth?”
Which brings me back to the lyrics of the song I mentioned at the beginning of the post. Sometimes He Calms the Storm
All who sail the sea of faith
Find out before too long
How quickly blue skies can grow dark
And gentle winds grow strong
Suddenly fear is like white water
Pounding on the soul
Still we sail on knowing
That our Lord is in control
Sometimes He calms the storm
With a whispered peace be still
He can settle any sea
But it doesn’t mean He will
Sometimes He holds us close
And lets the wind and waves go wild
Sometimes He calms the storm
And other times He calms His child
He has a reason for each trial
That we pass through in life
And though we’re shaken
We cannot be pulled apart from Christ
No matter how the driving rain beats down
On those who hold to faith
A heart of trust will always
Be a quiet peaceful place
And, of course, it means more to be singing it at a worship time (even private, just you and God) than just to be reading it. Just wanted to share what was on my heart tonight as the confluence of measles, uselessness, and a sovereign God came together. And I’ll try, oh, how I’ll try not to question Him about this time, and how painful and blurry my eyes are as I type this approximately 2 inches from the screen since my vision is so affected by these measles, so I don’t hear the WOE!, but a well-done from our God.

it’s pretty powerful just reading it, too …
